SOME INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT CANDLES
Candles can be as simple or immensely complicated piece of art. Wax can be incredibly dynamic when its nature is modified using chemicals.
Candle in primitive times just served the purpose of illuminating dark places, aesthetically though. Discovery of wax was one of the important discoveries of that time and making it household utility must have been a historic event then.
It is interesting to dig into history to trace the early face of illumination. Romans began making true dipped candles from tallow (animal fat), beginning around 500 BC. The earliest surviving candles originated in Han China around 200 BC. These early Chinese candles were made from whale fat. Interestingly, a person who made candles was traditionally known as a chandler.
During the Middle Ages, tallow candles were most commonly used. By the 13th century, candle making had become a guild craft in England and France. The candle makers (chandlers) went from house to house making candles from the kitchen fats saved for that purpose, or made and sold their own candles from small candle shops.
Beeswax, compared to animal-based tallow, burned cleanly, without smoky flame. Beeswax candles were expensive, and relatively few people could afford to burn them in their homes in medieval Europe. Beeswax still is expensive and not locally used to make wax based candles.
One can never experience the thrill of making candles, until one gets self involved in the process of aromatic candle making process. Candle making is not simple process anymore. It has changed completely. With change in time and technology, candles are no more only to illuminate dark corners of home, or provide heat; it has now become a piece of art to adorn uninteresting areas of home and work place. Fragrant candles are now great gift options as well.
Soy container candles, aromatic wax candles, floating candles, bees wax candles, coconut wax candles are modern age candle options. Beautifully decorated glass containers, tin containers, ceramic containers are available these days to prepare fragrant containers candles.
Eco friendly wax is much in demand these days as opposed to traditional paraffin wax which is petroleum by – product, though paraffin still remains main raw material due to its commercial value and also because it is pocket friendly.
Plant based wax, vegan wax, environment friendly wax, are till date elite products. They have slowly made their place in gift hampers, festival giveaways and gifts on different ceremonial occasions.
